DVDs & Videos FAQ

Where do I find videos/DVD in Milne Library and what is the loan period?

Videos/DVDs are integrated on our public shelves with our book collection. Most videos are available for 7 day loans (without renewals).

Should I give advance notice to borrow a video or DVD?

Although videos/DVDs do not require advance notice to borrow, you may find that a specific title may be signed out to another borrower. If you know in advance that you would like to show a specific video/DVD title on a specific date, we will do our best to make that title available for you if you fill out an advance loan request form or on a print form available from the Reserve Desk in Milne.

If I want a video/DVD today and I did not fill out an advance request form, how do I know if the video is available on the library shelves right now?

From your office or home computer, you may enter the title you want into GLOCAT, our online library catalog, and check its availability. Or you may call the Reference Desk (245-5595) and ask us to check in GLOCAT for you.

How do I determine whether Milne Library owns a specific video/DVD title?

Look up the necessary title in GLOCAT from your home or office computer, or you may call the Reference Desk (245-5595) and we'll check the title for you.

How can I get a list of all the videos/DVDs available in Milne Library

  • Choose Advanced Search in the table at the top of the GLOCAT page.
  • Select Document type from the Field to Search dropdown menu
  • enter vid* or DVD in the Type word or phrase text box.

How do I identify videos on a particular topic? (3 different strategies)

  • Use GLOCAT’s advanced search screen. Select All Fields under the Field to Search category. Then, type in the topic that you are searching for under Type word or phrase.

Next, select Document type in the second box under Field to Search to limit the resulting materials to videotapes, videodiscs, and DVD’s. Type in vid* or DVD in the second text box under Type word or phrase (vid* will search for videotapes and videodiscs). The following is an example if you are looking for a video on African American Civil Rights:

Field to Search Type word or phrase
All Fields African American Civil Rights
    and
    Document Type vid* or DVD

If you are unable to find the subject you are looking for, you may want to try different wording. For example, instead of using the term “Civil Rights,” use discrimination, segregation, equality or “equal rights.”

If you are finding too many unrelated videos or DVDs on the chosen subject, select Subject heading instead of All fields under Field to Search, and use all of the different terms you have brainstormed. Subject heading will narrow and focus your search as long as you are using a term identified by the Library of Congress.

  • Select All Fields (or Subject headings) under Field to Search. Remember that All Fields will keep your search broad and flexible if you are not sure what the specific subject heading may be.

Limit your search to a specific collection. At the bottom of the advanced search screen, select “Upper Level DVD/Video.”

  • Use GLOCAT’s basic search screen, enter your topic as a keyword anywhere.

Combine that topic with a second keyword, videorecording. The term videorecording should pull up any videotape, videodisc, or DVD on the chosen topic.

How do I access GLOCAT, our online library catalog, from my office or home computer:

Go to the Library homepage and choose GLOCAT under the Catalogs tab in the QuickSearch box. It is located in the top center of your screen.
