Locating a journal or magazine
Journals, magazines, and newspapers are periodicals, serial publications which contain a mix of articles, with different contributors, published at various intervals (such as weekly, monthly, bimonthly, etc.) throughout the year. Milne Library subscribes to over 1,500 different serial publications, including magazines, newspapers, journals, conference proceedings, annual reviews, and more.
Bound Periodicals
Bound periodicals are loose issues of journals and magazines which have been bound into books called “volumes”. Each bound volume of a periodical will be marked with the title, volume number, and dates covered. When searching GLOCAT, you will often see “Shelved alphabetically by title”, which refers to the bound journals and magazines located on the Lower Level of Milne Library. Some volumes of bound periodicals are stored in Fraser and Holcomb buildings, and are available through Milne Library's Information Delivery Services' online request form.

Current Issues of Print Periodicals
On the shelf next to the bound volumes of journals and magazines are cardboard file boxes containing the current issues of the journal or magazine. (“Current” may mean the last few issues or a full year or more.) This is where issues are kept until they are sent to the bindery to be bound into book volumes. If you are looking for a current issue and cannot locate it on the shelf, it may be at the bindery. Check in the Serials Office, located on the lower level of Milne, for when a periodical will be returned from the bindery. The most recent issues of popular magazines are kept in Books & Bytes Café.

Online Periodicals
Milne Library has access to a large number of online periodicals available through our website. Instead of getting journals or magazines in print, our preferred method will be to receive periodical content in an online format. This may mean searching a database for full-text periodical content or going to the journal’s website for full-text back issues.
The Journals by Title search allows a user to search for a journal or periodical and lists the title, holdings and location of print, microform and online periodicals which are available to our students, faculty and staff. For the online content, the results will include a link directly to the full-text.

Microfilm, Microfiche and Microcard
If the Journals by Title search or GLOCAT indicate a title or issue is on microfilm, microfiche or microcard, go the Microform area on the Lower Level of Milne Library, across from the photocopiers. Here you will find file cabinets of microfilm reels, flat transparent microfiche, and opaque microcards. Periodicals in each format are shelved alphabetically by title, with the titles listed on drawer labels. Once you have found your microform, you will need to locate the equipment used to read the microform. Microfilm/microfiche readers are located on the same level, outside of the Serials Office. Microcard readers are found on the Upper Level of Milne Library, near the books with Z call numbers.
The readers can make photocopies, costing 10 cents a page, with the machines only taking dimes or nickels. A change machine is located next to the photocopiers or on the Main Level of Milne Library at the Circulation Desk. There is no copying ability, however, for a microcard.
If you are a first time user, a Reference Librarian or a Serials Office staff member will be happy to show you how to use the equipment. Instructional guides are posted next to the machines. If you are having problems with the equipment, don’t try to fix it. Instead, please use the phone located on the wall next to the photocopiers to get help from the Circulation Desk.

Periodicals Shelved in Reference and Circulating Collections
Sometimes the Journals by Title search or GLOCAT will list a call number in the Reference or circulating collections. This means that the issues of this particular periodical are located on the book shelves at that call number, in that collection.
EXAMPLE: When searching GLOCAT, a user is looking for the Annual Review of Psychology. The information in the catalog indicated that this periodical is located on the Upper Level at BF30 .A56, NOT shelved alphabetically on the Lower Level with the bound periodicals.
