Assessment

Assessment of First Year Students' Information Literacy Skills

Assessment is a very big part of our INTD 105 library program. For three years, INTD 105 Instructors have graciously agreed to bring their students back to the library at the end of a semester so we can assess how well they remembered and understood what we taught them in the library session. Most instructors feel that the most convenient time for this assessment is during the final exam period since the class is on the schedule but is not given a final exam.

When the class arrives for the assessment, they are given laptops and directions for accessing the online quiz, which is taken anonymously. It usually takes between 30 and 45 minutes. Careful analysis of the assessment results leads to changes in the content and methods of our library sessions.

For example, in the Fall 2002 semester we completed the first assessment of the INTD 105 information literacy learning outcomes. Based on the Fall results, we made improvements in our instruction for Spring 2003. Specifically, we learned from the Fall assessment that students were having the most difficult time with outcome #3. Consequently, we made adjustments in our instruction which made differences in the Spring.
