Information Literacy Instruction Opportunities at GeneseoCollaborative Course-Integrated InstructionWorking collaboratively with an instruction librarian to integrate information literacy instruction into a course is the best way to help your students use the library and its resources effectively. Our goal is for most instruction to be collaborative, course-integrated instruction. Course-integrated instruction meets at least three of the following criteria:
Integrate information literacy instruction into your courses by scheduling one or more information literacy sessions with one of the library's instructors. You do not have to give up class time for information literacy instruction. The IL instructor will plan one or more sessions, fitting within your schedule and meeting your objectives for specific assignments or courses. Please request information literacy instruction through the "Requests and Policies" drop-down menu on the Milne Library website. Advance notice is always appreciated and helps us serve you and your students better. GOLD WorkshopsThroughout the year, librarians offer a variety of workshops designed to help all members of the campus community become more information and technology literate. Workshops are part of SUNY Geneseo’s GOLD Leadership Program, and completion of all information literacy requirements leads to a Ruby Certificate. The GOLD Brochure lists our workshops, dates, times, and locations. Please announce these workshops in your classes and encourage students to attend. Reference Desk ConsultationsA librarian is at the reference desk during most library hours. Please help your students understand that it is appropriate and expected for them to approach the librarian with questions about using the library and its resources. Student Research Consultations (SRC)Students with a research assignment may arrange a personal consultation with one of Milne's reference librarians. In each session, librarians will assist students with accessing and retrieving the most necessary and appropriate resources for their assignments. Students may arrange their own SRC through the "Research Help" drop-down menu on the Milne Library website. Please note that SRCs are not a good substitute for course-integrated instruction. Student Technology Consultation (STC)This service is similar to the SRC service described above, but the content focus is software use. Students learn how to effectively use applications such as Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, Powerpoint, or Dreamweaver and Adobe Photoshop and InDesign. Instruction is also available in how to use the Creation Stations, scanners, and digital cameras. Students may arrange their own STC through the "Research Help" drop-down menu on the Milne Library website. |
