The deep web is different from the surface
web in that you are able to "unlock" the website in order
to discover journal articles, books, and other sources hidden beneath.
The information you find through a deep web database could never be
unearthed via Google or Yahoo! Students must first find a deep web
database and then search it for the needed information. Some databases
you find will be free to the public, but others are property of SUNY
Geneseo and the system must recognize that you are affiliated with
Geneseo.
Students can use Google and Yahoo! to find
deep websites, but then will have to search the resulting sites themselves
to "unlock" the information. Search on the general topic
at hand (i.e. Culture* or Ethnograph* or Anthro*) and add the word
"database" to your search. If you are too specific with
your topic in Google, you will limit your chances of finding a database
that covers many different subject areas, like those found below.
Librarians' Index
to the Internet is a good search engine to start with since the
sites it provides are already approved for reliability of source and
information. Under the Advanced Search, add your general topic as
a description/title/subject.
