GOAL: Provide an introduction/refresher to effective searching methods to maximize accurate and relevant results to database searches.

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Students will be able to . . .

  • Name 2-3 databases where they can find scholarly information on animal behavior
  • Recognize the advantages and disadvantages of different levels of database searching
  • Apply those advantages and disadvantages when using a database to maximize their results
  • Appreciate subject headings and thesauri as an effective means of searching

* Provides references to and summaries of scholarly journal articles published since 1887.
SCOPUS * The largest abstract and citation database, covering over 3,400 titles in the Life Sciences and over 2,850 in the Social Sciences (also includes Health and Physical Sciences)
ScienceDirect

* Search and read over 2,200 full-text Elsevier journals covering a broad range of subject areas.

Academic Search Premier * A multi-disciplinary database including works in the humanities, social sciences, general sciences, and current events.

* Offers both scholarly and general publications.
WorldCAT * The most complete catalog of materials held by libraries around the world.

* Over 41,000,000 records representing 400 languages.

* Includes items from before 1000 BC to present.
