Scholarly Publication Cycle

Is the publication scholarly or popular or trade?

Scholarly Journals

  • Black and white text with simple fonts

  • Few, if any, advertisements
  • Written by scholars - experts in the field
  • Audience is also a scholar/expert or student
  • Article goes through a peer review process
  • Authors and their credentials are always given
  • Uses jargon, assumes the reader has knowledge of the topic
  • Articles contain many citations (end notes, foot notes, works cited)
  • Purpose of the article is to share knowledge

Popular Magazines

  • Varied fonts and colors, on glossy paper
  • Photographs are generally plentiful
  • Many advertisements
  • Written by free-lance and/or staff journalists
  • The audience is the general public, probably without prior knowledge of the topic
  • Authors may or may not be identified
  • Sources are usually not identified
  • Articles are reviewed in-house, usually by an editor

Trade Magazines

  • Usually glossy and colorful
  • Advertisements are for products and services used in the field
  • Authors and audience are practitioners in the field
