WRTG 105: The Underground Railroad (Professor Behrend)

The BLARE method for coding an article

In analyzing an article or piece of writing, it helps to dissect it by looking at each individual sentence. Determine the function of each statement in the article by writing B, L, A, R, or E next to each sentence.

B   Background information

L    Language that is manipulative, intending to provoke an emotional response

A   Arguments made for or against the main issue (can be quotes)

R   Research this further to discover new information or to verify claims

E   Evidence or examples to develop/support key points (can be quotes)

Coding an article helps you determine what the author is trying to accomplish in the article, how they’ve built their argument, how much evidence they’ve given, and how you might organize your future research.
