- "I Don’t See Color”: Challenging Assumptions About Discussing Race With Young Children Early childhood classrooms in the US continue to become increasingly diverse as we journey through the twenty first century. Yet and still, many early childhood educators have been slow to respond to these shifts in diversity on the basis of both developmental and political concerns. In this guess editorial, I argue for the integration of anti-racist education in the early childhood social studies classroom. The reasons I discuss here concern: when and how children develop racial attitudes, the difficulty of altering long-standing stereotypes, student empowerment, critical teacher reflection, and issues of standardization. I conclude with several considerations teachers should heed as they engage in this form of education.
- "Texts, White Lies and a Videotape: White Teachers Teaching African American Literature" by Lisa Marie Westbrooks The purpose of this paper is to share my personal memories and emotions of my experience as an African American, a Woman of Color, teacher-peer, teacher-researcher, student and a colonized standard American English speaker, situated in English classrooms as white teachers teach African American literature from a white gaze. I concur with previous researchers on this topic, but from a fresh perspective that traditional educational spaces support racial-socio and linguistic hierarchies by avoiding authentic racial, social and cultural ways of knowing, thus allowing reproduction and perpetuating academic and social inequities targeted toward multilingual learners. Furthermore, I suggest that teachers must acquaint themselves with communities of color to become affective and effective to specifically facilitate multilingual classrooms.
- DCPS: Preparing to Discuss Race and Police Violence in the Classroom Recent events involving the killing of black men by police have sparked expressions of outrage and injustice across the country. While the world watches these cases play out in the media and criminal justice system, these tragic events are teachable moments in classrooms across the District of Columbia Public Schools. In 2014, when the killing of Michael Brown by police in Ferguson, MO ignited both riots and peaceful protests, we compiled resources and protocols in an effort to help teachers prepare for and navigate difficult discussions with their students on race, racism and police violence. Since Ferguson, numerous other events including the deaths of Freddie Gray and Alton Sterling – and most recently Keith Scott in Charlotte, NC and Terence Crutcher in Tulsa, OK have prompted us to revisit and update these resources.

- Facing History: Reflecting on George Floyd's Death and Police Violence Towards Black Americans This Teaching Idea is a guide for teachers to begin conversations with their students about George Floyd’s death and the events that surround it. Such conversations are always difficult for teachers to facilitate, and distance learning presents added challenges to teaching sensitive material. Despite these challenges, it’s critical to make space for students to process the difficult and deeply painful events of the past week.
- Learning for Justice: "Don't Say Nothing" As educators we (sometimes unknowingly) step into roles of advocate, caretaker, guide, and even mother or father to students. Students pay attention to everything we say and do. They particularly pay attention to our silence. We may be uncomfortable talking about race, but we can no longer afford to be silent. We have chosen a profession, which—like parenting—requires that our comforts come second to those of children.
- NAEYC: Becoming Upended: Teaching and Learning About Race and Racism With Young Children and Their Families Research demonstrates that children’s awareness of racial differences and the impact of racism begins quite early (Tatum 2003; Winkler 2009). Multiple studies document the ways that young children take notice of racial differences and note that as early as preschool, children may begin excluding their peers of different races from play and other activities (Winkler 2009). Many argue that creating safe spaces for children to explore these topics is more important than ever, given the current political and cultural climate, where these issues are highly visible (Pitts 2016; Harvey 2017; Poon 2017). As such, parents and teachers have an obligation to teach and learn with children about these critical and complex issues (Delpit 2012; Derman-Sparks, LeeKeenan, & Nimmo 2015; Ramsey 2015). This article documents how one kindergarten teacher, Diandra Verwayne (the second author), worked with the parents in her classroom to grow together in their understandings of the role we all must play in talking with young children about race and racism. Additionally, this piece offers curricular and pedagogical resources for adults who are committed to engaging with young children in this crucial work.
- National Equity Project: The Lens of Systemic Oppression The metaphor of a lens describes the possibility of seeing our contexts in new and revealing ways. If seeing leads to believing, and believing ultimately shapes our actions, then we must expand our ways of seeing to transform troubling outcomes for young people. Three levels of analysis inform each lens: the individual, the institutional, and the structural. By applying our lens at each level, we can begin to identify opportunities for equitable change.
- Rochester History: "Racial Segregation in Rochester Schools: 1818–1856" Author Justin Murphy has uncovered an ugly truth about education in Rochester with this issue of Rochester History: Black children in this city have had educational opportunities thwarted for more than 150 years. Murphy’s research focuses on the early to mid-nineteenth century, when African American families faced a dual dilemma: Their children were discouraged from going to school with their white neighbors, but separate schools for black children were too expensive to sustain. He traces the activism of men like Austin Steward, the Rev. Thomas James, and Frederick Douglass but focuses on the power of black parents in demanding that their children be educated. Fast-forward to 2019, and you still find African American parents and activists like Lovely Warren, Jackie Campbell, Jerome Underwood, Tanishia Johnson, and Toyin Anderson demanding better education for their children. One hundred and fifty years ago, it was parents who ultimately achieved the segregation of Rochester schools, and it is today’s parents who continue to fight for the best education possible for their children.
- Teaching for Change: Teaching Young Children About Race Recent events have led many parents and teachers to seek out resources to address issues of race and inequality with young children. We share with you here an excerpt from the book Anti-Bias Education for Young Children and Ourselves. The book offers practical guidance to early childhood educators (including parents) for confronting barriers of prejudice, misinformation, and bias about specific aspects of personal and social identity; most importantly, it includes tips for adults and children to respect each other, themselves, and all people. You can feel it coming: that awful joke your friend likes to tell about immigrants. Questions like “Don’t all lives matter?” or “Did he resist arrest?” The discomfort becomes palpable. Your gut twists. God, I hope someone says something, you think with increasing desperation. And so does everyone else. This phenomenon, in which no one in a group of witnesses chooses to disrupt a problematic event, is called the bystander effect, said Thomas Vance, a national certified counselor and a postdoctoral psychology fellow at the New School for Social Research in New York
- NPR: "Report Updates Landmark 1968 Racism Study, Finds More Poverty and Segregation" A new study that builds on the Kerner Report's work was released this week. Healing Our Divided Society: Investing in America Fifty Years After the Kerner Report was co-edited by Fred Harris (the sole surviving member of the original Commission) and Alan Curtis, CEO of the Milton Eisenhower Foundation. It notes that poverty has increased and so has the inequality gap between white America and Americans who are black, brown and Native American. The gains children of color made when efforts continued to desegregate schools in the 60s began to reverse by 1988. Court decisions that loosened oversight of previously de facto segregated schools resulted in a huge change: In 1988, almost half of all students of color went to majority-white schools. Today that number has plummeted to 20 percent. Poverty is such a problem, the study concluded, that if it is not mitigated, America's very democracy is threatened.

- Belly of the Beast: The Politics of Anti-Fatness as Anti-Blackness by Da'Shaun Harrison To live in a body both fat and Black is to exist at the margins of a society that creates the conditions for anti-fatness as anti-Blackness. Hyper-policed by state and society, passed over for housing and jobs, and derided and misdiagnosed by medical professionals, fat Black people in the United States are subject to sociopolitically sanctioned discrimination, abuse, condescension, and trauma. Da’Shaun Harrison–a fat, Black, disabled, and nonbinary trans writer–offers an incisive, fresh, and precise exploration of anti-fatness as anti-Blackness, foregrounding the state-sanctioned murders of fat Black men and trans and nonbinary masculine people in historical analysis. Policing, disenfranchisement, and invisibilizing of fat Black men and trans and nonbinary masculine people are pervasive, insidious ways that anti-fat anti-Blackness shows up in everyday life. Fat people can be legally fired in 49 states for being fat; they’re more likely to be houseless. Fat people die at higher rates from misdiagnosis or nontreatment; fat women are more likely to be sexually assaulted. And at the intersections of fatness, Blackness, disability, and gender, these abuses are exacerbated. Taking on desirability politics, the limitations of gender, the connection between anti-fatness and carcerality, and the incongruity of “health” and “healthiness” for the Black fat, Harrison viscerally and vividly illustrates the myriad harms of anti-fat anti-Blackness. They offer strategies for dismantling denial, unlearning the cultural programming that tells us “fat is bad,” and destroying the world as we know it, so the Black fat can inhabit a place not built on their subjugation.
