1. Go to the Geneseo Milne Library Website
2. From this point on, click on "Advanced Search" in the GLOCAT database
3. In the "Search for:" section, make sure to select "Electronic Resources" as we are aiming to find these sources directly through the database. *Be sure not to skip this step!*
3a. Using Quotation Marks (" ") in your search will provide search results using the exact keywords contained within.
For example:
"penal labor" or "prison labor" will narrow down the sources including the specific phrase you are searching for.
3b. Using Parentheses ( ) will organize your terms and clarify to the database what goes together
For Example:
(Mental Health) AND (Teenagers) OR (Social Media)
3c. The use of Boolean Operators like AND, OR, and NOT are used to either broaden or narrow down your search. Combining these words together will make your search more specific to your research topic.
4. Once you have found a set of articles you would like to use, you can narrow down the search by looking at the "Modify Your Results" option on the left-hand side of the screen.
5. To further narrow down our search, scroll down this section until you see "Journal Title" where you can find newspaper articles based on the publishing company.
For this specific course, you should aim to use sources from the likes of The New York Times or Washington Post (if applicable to your research topic).
Do not click on Times as an option for newspaper sources. Times is a British National Newspaper. Use this newspaper source if your research includes anything from a non-American perspective.
For relatively current or time-sensitive research topics like Covid-19, social media, artificial intelligence (AI), environmental challenges, etc. it is recommended that you filter the dates to fit these topics that may have seen a spike in publication from authors and researchers alike.
Once you pick the desired journal titles and/or dates, click "Apply Filter" The amount of results may decrease, but the remaining articles will include sources targeted towards your topic.
Click on any article that fits the description of your topic:
There will be a number of websites listed where the article may be available. In some cases, the article may not be available on some databases. If there are multiple links, try out a few to see if they will work.
If you are able to find a working link, your newspaper article should look similar to this:
