Keynote and Panel

Open educational resources continue to improve in both quantity and quality. They have the potential to release both students and professors at Geneseo from the restrictions of mass-produced textbooks, and to allow for extensive customization of course materials.

This event will include discussions in a variety of formats about the potentials and challenges of adopting, adapting, and building open textbooks and resources. Join us on May 15th in Bailey Hall to explore the potential of these open educational resources at SUNY Geneseo!

Participants are strongly encouraged to bring a laptop in order to actively participate in the breakout sessions. For those who wish to tag the event on social media, the hashtag is #OERSymposium2017.

Participants will ideally leave the workshop with at least one resource that they can utilize for their courses.

Are you a fan of customizability? Join the discussion around adapting pre-existing textbooks to suit your specific course needs. This session will discuss:

Creative Commons and copyright
An overview of how to sign up to mix and match textbook material through Lumen Learning
Adapt a textbook into a canvas course (hands-on activity)

Participants will leave the workshop with materials detailing the process for setting up your account and adapting a textbook.

Build: Construct the Course You Want to Teach

What do you do when there's no resource that's exactly right for your course? This session is for you! It will explore the implications for customization of creating course materials from the ground up, as well as the potential for transforming your instruction to take advantage of open materials. The discussion will include:

Creative Commons and copyright
Course Mapping / Backwards Design (Workshop)
Open Pedagogy: Including students in the design process

Participants will leave the workshop with a concept plan of how to connect original and adapted course materials into a course built from the ground up using open resources.
